The big day is quickly approaching and everything on your checklist is slowly getting crossed off from caterers to the cake, but there's still one major to-do before pulling off a flawless Miami wedding — apply for a marriage license. Here's the skinny on what to know before you go to the courthouse.

Even if you're getting married in Miami, you can apply for a marriage license at any courthouse in Florida. In South Florida, two of the major counties are Miami-Dade (which encompasses Aventura, Bal Harbour, Key Biscayne and Coral Gables) and Broward, which includes Fort Lauderdale.

If you're not from the area, plan on spending a few days in town before the wedding, since there's a three-day waiting period after the license is issued before you can legally tie the knot. Luckily if both the bride and groom are out-of-staters, or they've taken a licensed Florida four-hour pre-marital course, the waiting time is waived. Another perk of taking the course is that the marriage license fee is reduced from $93.50 to $61.

Before you head to the courthouse with the groom, fill out an application online and bring it along with at least two forms of ID. You don't need your social security card, but you will need to know the number. The license is valid for 60 days and once the ceremony is over, couples who received their license in Miami-Dade County have to return it to the Miami-Dade County Marriage License Bureau.

After all the legal stuff is complete, it's time to snap a pic and share the news with friends before getting back to all the wedding prep.
