When Vera Wang, one of the most famous wedding dress designers in recent history, presents a Fall 2014 runway show consisting entirely of colored wedding dresses, one thing's for certain: White is slowly loosening its hold on a woman's wedding day getup. While this trend has been gaining more momentum recently, it's got a longer history than you'd think:

Pink

Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Reese Witherspoon, and Vera Wang's most recent collection confirmed it: Pink is having a bridal moment, and not just on the bridesmaids. Pink gowns may not be making anyone blush now, but way back in 2002, when perennial trendsetter Gwen Stefani stepped out in this dip-dyed stunner by pal John Galliano, it certainly made waves.

Yellow

Amber Tamblyn wore a canary yellow dress as she arrived barefoot in a canoe to her wedding to David Cross last year. While Elizabeth Taylor would probably never have been caught doing that (unless it was for a movie role), it looks like Tamblyn took some inspiration from the Cleopatra actress' flower crown and gown at her 1964 wedding to Richard Burton.

Black

Grandmothers across the nation were heard muttering "Marry in black, wish yourself back" (or was that just mine?) when Shenae Grimes and Avril Lavigne released photos of their noir gowns. Both women were rocking a pretty-punk vibe, but it was the queen of Hollywood glamour who wore one of the most famous black wedding getups—Marilyn Monroe in her 1954 wedding to Joe DiMaggio. What other fashion icon took a page out of Monroe's style book? Sarah Jessica Parker, who donned a black frock to her 1997 wedding to Matthew Broderick.

Even if you're not a celeb, colored gowns can work for you. All sorts of bright-hued dresses are popping up in collections, like a mint green number from Claire Pettibone, Watters' fluttery ballet-pink gown, and an Oscar De La Renta that's got your "something blue" all covered. Once you've got the perfect dress, it's just a matter of keeping the rest of your ensemble simple (here's where the ivory, taupe, and ecru work best—non-clashing shoes, accessories, and bridesmaids!) so that you and your gorgeous dress can shine!

Last week in Paris, Giambattista Valli sent 39 looks down the runway, each wedding-worthy dress design a spectacular play on light, color and shape. For his fifth couture collection since his debut in 2011, the Italian designer drew inspiration from a classic wedding registry staple—porcelain.

A marriage of embroidery, light-as-air fabrics and artful construction, Valli's couture collection (which could easily walk down the aisle) found it's roots in four European nations and their famed porcelain. The first 8 looks, all gently white and pale violet-grey (with short hems perfect for a daring bride or bridesmaid), were inspired by 18th-century Italian Capodimonte porcelain. English Wedgewood blue followed, with another 8 looks that balanced delicate floral appliques with strong waist-cinching belts by Luigi Scialanga—all of which make for whimsical, fashion-forward wedding dress designs.

The climax of the couture presentation found it's energy in poppy red gowns à la France's Sèvres porcelain; blossoms trailed down translucent tulle trumpet skirts, and draped off shoulders of gathered silk. The final looks of the collection brilliantly captured the flora and fauna of German Meissen porcelain, with appliques adorning bodices made for the aisle.

Valli is not stranger to the wedding world—he collaborated with the house of Missoni to provide couture counseling to Margherita Missoni's gown of antique lace for her June 2012 wedding, and most recently designed Jessica Biel's rose pink gown for her Italian wedding to Justin Timberlake last year.
