When you picture your wedding day, you probably don't see any metallic eyeshadows or shimmery lipstick on your face — it might be time to rethink that. With beauty giants like Pat McGrath and Urban Decay coming out with eye-catching metallic eye and lip products, your wedding day look could go from gorgeous to glam, in the chicest way possible. As we know, wedding makeup is not one-size-fits-all. Everyone has a different idea of beauty. It's the same with the climate of the place you're getting married. A tropical Hawaiian "I do" requires a different approach than nuptials in the desert of Palm Springs or the mountains of upstate New York or Aspen. As celebrity makeup artist Kirin Bhatty (who works with Freida Pinto and Rosario Dawson) says, "When having an outdoor wedding many times it can feel like your makeup is at war with the elements, but with the right products it doesn't have to be that way." Issues include direct sun, which can blow out your makeup, making it appear you're not wearing any, and can also turn you bright red. According to Jenny Slate's beauty guru, "The key to successful destination wedding makeup is to embrace the environment you are in and let it reflect where you are. If it's hot, embrace the glow; if it's cold, embrace a rosy cheek and matte lip."

If you've planned your vows on an island or a beach, it's critical you take sun care into account. (Supergoop's setting spray provides protection and is mattifying.) "Even if it's overcast you're still vulnerable to the sun's effects," says Bhatty. "Because of the beach, skin and hair will be extra dewy because of the moisture in the air. If you are someone whose makeup tends to run, be on extra alert because it's very hard to maintain in this climate if you have oily skin." To combat that, prep properly. Start with a mattifying moisturizer by Kate Somerville, she says, then Smashbox Primer Light to control shine and force makeup to stay in place. Try a lid primer by NARS to keep shadow from budging, too. Waterproof eyeliners and cream-based shadows (set with a powder) are key — she likes Make Up For Ever's. With those, "You cold jump into the ocean after and your makeup should be just fine," says Bhatty. Seal everything in with Urban Decay All Nighter. Ultimately, she says, "Embrace the glow and don't fight it."

Good news for desert brides: "As far as destination weddings go, dry heat is the easiest to handle," says Bhatty. "Though you can't stop sweating with makeup, you can ensure it looks soft and is long-lasting." In this climate highly moisturized skin is key, since you can easily wind up feeling-and looking-parched. (Make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids leading up to the big day, too.) Bhatty's prep go-to is La Prairie SPF 50, which will protect and also keep the complexion supple, bright and hydrated. Next, use Smashbox's hydrating primer on the cheeks and orbital bones for glow, and primer light on the T-zone to reduce shine. Cream blushes, highlighters and waterproof liners and mascaras "will be your best friend," and will ensure a "beautiful, healthy desert glow."

For a wooded, rustic wedding, sun care is also important (try Kate Somerville SPF 20, which protects sans white cast and is hydrating yet non-greasy) and primer is always critical. "Anytime you're in the elements your makeup is fighting against them to stay on," says Bhatty. Particularly if it's cold, skin can chap, so she advises lots and lots of hydration. (And if it's buggy where you are, remember to pack a natural bug spray that doesn't smell too terrible.) Before any makeup goes on, she likes to use Cle de Peau's sheet masks: "They are really helpful and give you an instant hydration starting point." Afterward, apply creamy products and set them with a powder-based product in the same hue, which will give a one-two punch that should last through the big day. At the end, Bhatty recommends, seal and set the look with rose water and a dusting of Cle de Peau translucent powder in the T-zone. Ultimately, says the makeup artist, it's all about "making your environment work with you, not against you, because the last thing you want is to be touching up every five minutes."

The 5 Best Pre-Wedding Beauty Treatments — and When to Get ‘Em!

It goes without saying that on your wedding day you want to look and feel your best. For many brides, that means a pre-wedding diet and workout routine, as well as hair and makeup trials. But before you walk down the aisle, there are a few more beauty-boosting treatments you might want to consider. From lash extensions to teeth whitening, we're getting the scoop from some of the best in the biz, to guarantee you're perfectly groomed and gorgeous on your big day. After all, wedding photos last a lifetime.

Laser Hair Removal
When it comes to tying the knot, there's a lot to think about. The last thing you want to focus on is waxing or shaving. Laser hair removal is a permanent solution for smooth skin. Christian Karavolas, owner of Romeo & Juliette in Midtown Manhattan, recommends starting treatment six to nine months before your wedding date (laser hair removal requires on average six sessions spaced six to eight weeks apart). "Once you do a course of treatment, hair will not be prickly or stubbly. Plus, you won't have to deal with ingrown hairs or irritation." Beach honeymoon, anyone?

Highlights
Regardless of your hair color, brightening up your 'do is a sure fire way to look fab on your big day. "You don't have to go for a major contrast, but building dimension into your color makes all the difference in photos," says Kristina Barricelli, founder of NYC's Gemini 14 and Hairdo Ambassador. When it comes to color, timing is everything. Barricelli advises brides visit their colorist one week before the big day. "Highlights need about a week — and a few washes — to settle into a naturally luminous color. Any longer than that can start to reveal roots." And if you plan on wearing clip-in extensions on your big day, she recommends bringing them to that appointment, to guarantee a perfect color match."

Teeth Whitening
Want a sparkling smile for your wedding photos? "Professional teeth whitening allows brides to have the brightest smile in the shortest amount of time — with dramatic results in about an hour," says Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist, Kevin Sands DDS (the man the Kardashians trust with their pearly whites). "The beauty of this procedure is that brides can come in a couple weeks or just a few days before their wedding date." And to keep your smile looking its best, Sands suggests avoiding stain-causing foods and drinks, like blueberries, coffee and red wine.

Gel Mani
What better way to show off your engagement (and wedding) ring bling than with a perfectly polished mani? When it comes to your big day, a gel mani is a must. Whereas regular polishes can chip and crack, gel will last a good two to three weeks, when applied properly. "It will hold up to the wedding day craziness and last through the honeymoon," says Nina Werman, owner of NYC nail art mecca, Valley. When it comes to getting your digits prepped for the big day, Werman recommends brides come in a few days before. Opting for a design? She advocates one with negative space at the cuticle. "It helps you get the most out of your gel mani. It'll grow out naturally over the next few weeks, without the noticeable gap between the cuticle and polish."

Lash Extensions
If eyes are the window to the soul, lashes are the curtains. Extensions are the perfect way to take your bridal beauty look to the next level. They create thicker, longer lashes that still look natural. Plus, they look fab in photos! Sabah Feroz, lash expert at NYC's Blink Brow Bar, recommends that brides have a trial, approximately three months out. "There are many different size options, depending on the look you're going for, so a practice run is worthwhile." When it comes to the wedding, she suggest coming in two or three days before. "If you look after them, they'll last for up to six weeks, which means no need for mascara on your honeymoon!"

After a ceremony filled with promises and vows, the most important kiss of your relationship, your wedding kiss, seals the deal, confirming your status as a married couple. It's also the most watched kiss you've ever had, after all, all eyes — and cameras — will be on you (and your lips!) once the officiant says, "You may now kiss the bride!" Before the biggest smooch of your married life, get your lips smooth, plump, and photo-ready with these pout-perfecting lip treatments.

Lather Vanilla and Argan Lip Scrub

You exfoliate your body before applying self-tanner for a streak-free glow, so why not exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick for an even application of color? This certified organic lip scrub gently buffs with sugar cane crystals to remove unflattering flakes, leaving behind a moisture-rich barrier packed with honey, beeswax, and various oils to protect against future dryness. You'll be hooked on the results — and the sweet vanilla and spearmint scent. (Vanilla and argan lip scrub, $10, Lather)

First Aid Beauty Lip Balm

Chapped lips can happen to anyone at almost any time, but they're especially a concern for winter brides. Luckily, First Aid Beauty offers a fragrance- and taste-free intensive lip treatment that helps alleviate — and, remarkably, prevent — dry, distressed lips. Its key ingredients all draw on the natural healing power of bees: honey and beeswax for moisture and propolis extract to repair and restore damaged lips. ("Ultra Repair Intensive" lip balm, $20, First Aid Beauty)

3LAB Perfect Lips Hydrating Treatment

On your wedding day, everything should be perfect — including your lips. This aptly named lip treatment offers long-lasting moisture, a fuller looking pout, and a more defined lip line thanks to super scientific-sounding ingredients like Bio-Engineered Renewal Complex and Apple Stem Cell Technology. Even better, after repeated use, Perfect Lips minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, so your lips can continue to look perfect long after you say "I do." ("Perfect Lips" hydrating lip treatment, $45, 3LAB)

Bodyography Exfoliating Lip Duo

We wouldn't necessarily recommend sipping on a mojito while getting your wedding makeup done, but we're totally on board with lip scrub and solid lip oil that smell and taste just like the traditional Cuban cocktail. Practically a party for your lips, this exfoliating lip duo smooths and conditions with Marula Oil, a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals while helping to build collagen. This convenient two-in-one — perfect for vegan and gluten-free brides — comes with a mirror for on-the-go exfoliation emergencies. Because that's a thing. (Exfoliating lip duo, $25, Bodyography)

Miss Spa Deep Therapy Lip Mask

Before you seal the deal with a kiss, seal your lips with this innovative gel patch. After 20 minutes of intense hydration and nourishment (and silence — there's no talking while the patch is on your mouth!), your lips will be soft, smooth, and ready for their first kiss as a married couple. But don't stop with the wedding: At $4, this lip mask is so affordable, you can keep your kisser in prime condition even after the honeymoon ends. (Gel lip mask, $4, Miss Spa)

Lancer Volume Enhancing Lip Serum

If you can't get to Beverly Hills for an appointment with Dr. Harold Lancer, you can still reap the benefits of his expertise in the form of Lancer Volume Enhancing Lip Serum. The celebrity dermatologist's advanced lip treatment minimizes the appearance of vertical fine lines while increasing hydration for visibly fuller lips. While the product can define lip contours and highlight your natural lip color on its own, it can also be worn as a foundation under your wedding lipstick to help bright colors pop. (Volume enhancing lip serum, $40, Lancer Skincare)

GrandLips Lip Plumper

Given the choice, we'll almost always pick a product that works instantly and offers long-term benefits. GrandeLIPS, for example, is a hydrating lip plumper that makes mouths look bigger in three-to-five minutes and increases overall hydration, volume, and firmness in just one month. The vanilla-flavored treatment, which can be worn on its own or under other lip colors, tingles when applied; that's the hyaluronic acid and Volulip™ getting down to business. Jenna Dewan-Tatum at Variety's Power of Women Luncheon: It would be hard to get more perfectly on-trend than Jenna Dewan-Tatum's look. From the rose gold shadow to the radiant skin (nevermind the eyelash-skimming fringe!), it's perfect for a wedding day look. To mimic her glow, use a finishing powder with a radiant finish, and a cream blush will help keep your cheek color in place all day without any settling. For the eyes, wet your brush before applying a rose gold eyeshadow to your lids and under the lower lashes — this helps make the metallic finish pop.

Camilla Belle at the 7th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic: Who says simple makeup can't make a big impact? Take your cues from Camilla Belle for a look that offers plenty of wow without a lot of product. First, buff a lightweight foundation into your skin with a wet makeup sponge and then use a coral blush along the cheek bones. Highlight the high points of the face making sure you use plenty under the eye area. Tightline the upper and lower lash lines and apply a coat of mascara. Well-groomed brows and a semi-matte watermelon-colored lipstick finish the look.

Mandy Moore at the 7th Annual Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic: I think it's safe to say 'trend alert'! Understated makeup with a bright lip is definitely happening, and apropos for any style wedding. For Mandy Moore's take on the trend, use a light pink blush on the apples of your cheeks and be sure to use a setting spray so that your luminous skin doesn't begin looking overly shiny as the day progresses. For the lipstick, look for a formula that is high shine, so you get a shiny finish that isn't overly thick and sometimes messy like a gloss — you'll be doing a fair amount of kissing after all!

Tips for Long Lasting Wedding Makeup

Feeling beautiful on your wedding day is every bride's well-deserved right! Whether you're hiring a glam squad to do your hair and makeup or watching a ton of YouTube beauty videos to learn the tips and tricks yourself, figuring out how to keep your makeup looking perfect all day is something to add to your pre-wedding to-do list. To help make that happen, here is what seven makeup experts recommend as their number one tip for long-lasting wedding day beauty.

1. Line Your Lips
"Line your lips and fill in the entire lip with lip liner. Follow with lipstick (not gloss) and then lightly pat with a tissue before applying a second coat. Also, it's important to remember to apply lipgloss sparingly because gloss tends to take off lip color faster." —Michelle Bouse, founder of Beauty Boutique

2. Don't Rush
"As you've prepared for this day to come, I recommend not rushing by having your hair and makeup timed out so you can relax and enjoy the beauty process. Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for make-up application on your wedding day. Also, It's essential to have your skin clean, exfoliated, and hydrated so you can achieve a flawless application of make-up. Don't forget to wear a button down shirt so you won't smudge your beautiful wedding day hair and make-up." —Tessa McCullough, Makeup Artist at G2O Spa + Salon

3. Take Care of Oil
"If you are feeling oily, use a tissue or toilet paper to blot your t-zone instead of adding more makeup on." —Colgate Optic White Designer Smile Squad member, Marianna Hewitt

4. Make Your Foundation Waterproof
"If you already have a foundation that you love but its not necessarily waterproof, try priming the skin with Milk of Magnesia on a cotton ball (after you moisturize) to lock on the coverage for hours. This helps if you sweat a lot, get insanely oily or if you just want your makeup to stay in place all day!" —Beauty blogger, Nicole Williams

5. Go With Lip Stain
"For the perfect bridal lip, use a stain! You won't have time to re-apply all day and you don't want it rubbing off all over your new husband. Anastasia's new soft coral/pink in Dolce is the perfect color for a bride! Apply just before you walk down the ailse, layer with a sheer gloss for your photos and you're all set." —Celebrity makeup artist, Rob Harmon

6. Prep and Prime
"The secret to long lasting makeup is in prepping of the skin, rather than the actual makeup application. Skin that has not been properly prepped will not be able to hold makeup beautifully. When you see makeup that starts to disintegrate with sweating and dancing, most of the fault lies in the skin preparation before makeup application. Always make sure that you start with a clean face. Wash your face and use a toner or cleanser to completely get rid of all dead skin, dirt or makeup residues. Moisturize your face (under your eyes as well) so skin is hydrated. Freshly hydrated skin will prevent makeup from drying on your skin & will help makeup blend in perfect for a long lasting effect. Follow your moisturizer with a pore primer, that will decrease the look of pores, wrinkles and lines." —Dina Ramon of TCBeauty Care

7. Layering is Key
"Layering is key, if I have a bride who wants a look involving eyeliner I always trace with black shadow first, and layer with a gel or liquid to ensure the look lasts all night. The same goes for blush, I love layering a cream blush and powder blush, it gives demension, texture and lasts for hours." —Lori Leib, professional makeup artist and Creative Director of Bodyography Cosmetics

Two big trends converge for this ladylike look: pink eyeshadow and monochromatic makeup. Start a glow-inducing skincare routine and letting your brows grow in fuller today!

Marchesa

Marchesa If you've ever thought about giving the flower crown trend a little added glamour, the geniuses behind Marchesa's look read your mind. By giving your hair adornment structure in the form of pearls, crystals and precious metal, you still get that floral vibe, but with much more polish. We also can't look away from the models' pearly inner-eyes. Wet an angled brush and then dip it into a shimmery white or platinum-colored shadow to get the effect.

Classic glamour with a modern twist was the name of the beauty game at Alfred Angelo. How exactly was it accomplished? Make sure your red lipstick has orange undertones and a semi-matte finish, make your cat-eye flick so thin it's almost geometric, and of course highlight, highlight, highlight.

Anyone who suggests that brides can't be utterly au courant when it comes to beauty needs to check out this show! Pink eyeshadow is sticking around as a trend in a big way, and brides can embrace it right along with the rest of the world. Two big tips: Keep your eye drops handy so there isn't a hint of redness in your actual eyes (no matter how much celebrating you've been doing) and keep the rest of your makeup subtle, so the eyes can really shine.

Lela Rose

Lela Rose
Lela Rose's girl is a nature-lover who knows the importance of minimalism. If that speaks to you, then her brand of healthy, 'just went for a run' beauty is probably what you should strive for on your big day! Think glowing skin, lips that are a bit redder than nature and very little eye makeup.

If your wedding day is all about fantasy, then perhaps your nuptial makeup should be, as well! That is the strong message from Rime Arodaky's runway, and we love it. Take your highlighting game to all new levels and actually make your lids and cheekbones take on a high-wattage shine. We suggest layering highlighters to achieve this—so think about using your cream stick, your powder and your liquid formula at the same time (we get giddy just thinking about it!).

Ashley Madekwe Wedding Makeup Bag

Every bride should have an arsenal of must-have products at her disposal to get her through the big day primped, polished, and smiling — with a killer lip color, of course! But what makes up that makeup bag can be as different as every individual bride herself. Ashley Madekwe — the British actress and fashion blogger (@smashleybell), best known for Revenge and now starring in WGN's Salem — offered us a peek in the bridal bag that she toted on her London wedding day, where she took a less-is-more approach when it came to her beauty look.

"I got married in a townhouse in London, so I did a relaxed version of old-Hollywood waves with a comb on one side — classic but not overdone," the actress remembers. "An elaborate undo would've felt out of place, and I didn't want to worry about touchups... I loved my natural makeup look. I checked the mirror just once to apply lip balm. Four days before the wedding, though, I got lash extensions that were too long and thick. Everyone said they'd fall out in time, but they didn't. I don't recommend this, but I cut them myself the morning of!"

So just how did Madekwe accomplish her natural wedding day glow? With the help of her makeup artist, Wendy Rowe, and a few face-perfecting products. "We did a muted 'you but better' look that wore so well," explains Madekwe. Going for a similar look? Try Burberry Eye Color Cream in Nude Glow and Light Glow Blush in Tangerine Blush. "I initially wanted a bold red lip, but Wendy talked me out of it," adds Madekwe. "With the glam gown, it would've been too much of a look for me." The star instead opted for a softer, dusty rose shade. (Cream eyeshadow, $30, Burberry; Blush, $42, Burberry; "English Rose" lipstick, $33, Burberry available at Sephora)

With the man who makes me smile more than anyone else on our wedding day... ??????Happy anniversary baby ??????

To prep for the big day, Madekwe's makeup artist gave her some homework. "The best advice [she] gave me after I got engaged was 'Grow out your brows.' I'm still growing them!" Short on time? Fill any sparse spaces in with Burberry's Effortless Eyebrow Definer in Ebony. To get her skin glowing, the actress also moisturized like there was no tomorrow. "Sunday Riley Juno Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil nourishes my dry skin without looking greasy. And I drank lots of water, which I'm usually bad about," says Madekwe. And finally, Madekwe quickly fixed a beauty emergency with a fan-favorite go-to product. "When I got to London, the change in water gave me a dry scalp, so I massaged in some tea-tree oil, and that cleared it right up!" (Eyebrow pencil, $33, Burberry available at Nordstrom; Face oil, $90, Sunday Riley available at Sephora; Tea tree oil, $5, Edens Garden).

For her wedding day mani, Madekwe went with an oldie but a goodie. "I wore Essie nail polish in Ballet Slippers," she says. "One of my bridesmaids did my nails — and bikini wax! — at her mom's salon in north London." And the bride was smelling sweet with a special fragrance she bought just for the occasion — but she still regrets not going with her signature scent! "I bought a rose perfume just for that day, but it smelled too old ladyish. I wish I'd worn my usual, Le Labo Thé Noir 29." (Nail polish, $9, Essie available at Ulta; Perfume, $175 for 1.7 oz., Le Labo)

7 Wedding Day Essentials Every Bride Should Pack

Hair & Beauty, Wedding Beauty, Wedding Makeup  Comments Off on 7 Wedding Day Essentials Every Bride Should Pack
Oct 042016

Sure, everyone might tell you that your wedding day goes by very fast, but when planning your wedding day beauty look long-lasting is the name of the game. You'll want to make sure you look and feel fresh all day long, especially since you'll most likely get your hair and makeup done early on in the morning. To ensure that happens, here are the seven beauty items that every bride should pack with her on her wedding day.

1. Fashion Tape
Carrying around fashion tape is always a great way to tame any last-minute issues with your wedding dress or any of the bridesmaids dresses.

2. Makeup Remover
Got a little teary during the ceremony? Happens to the best of brides! Don't fret, and just dab the running mascara off your face with a tiny bet of makeup remover.

3. An Extra Lipstick
Obviously ask your makeup artist to apply your favorite lipstick in the morning, but stash an extra one in your wedding bag for easy touchups throughout the day. That way, you won't mix colors later on and keep that pout looking kissable through the night!

4. Hair Ties
It always seems like we have a pile of hair ties, but we can't seem to find one when we need one the most. Make sure to pack a handful of hair ties. They may come in handy later in the night if you want to re-do your sweaty up-do after all those moves on the dance floor.

5. Eyelash Glue
Whether or not you're wearing fake eyelashes, having a tiny tube of eyelash glue available is a good idea for any sudden emergencies, such as bracelets or nails breaking off. Eyelash glue is sturdy enough to help with a quick and temporary fix.

6. Moisturizer
You never know how your skin is going to feel on your wedding day — but dry skin is not photogenic! If any parts of your body need a bit of love, make sure to have a tiny bottle of moisturizer available for your arms and legs. (Don't forget those elbows!)

7. Blotting Paper
Throughout the day, you might find yourself feeling a little bit oily or sweaty. Carry around blotting papers so that you can easily dry your skin without wiping off any makeup.
