What's a wedding without music? Whether you go traditional or choose pop songs that speak to your story, the right music will really help your wedding day flow. And that goes for your wedding ceremony, too! So how do you pick the perfect songs to get everyone down the aisle (and back!)? Here are a few tips from our experts.

Before you start building playlists, check in with your ceremony venue. Some, particularly more strictly religious venues, have limits on what types of music you can choose. That might mean you can only choose from a set of traditional options, or you can get creative as long as it's instrumental and doesn't have any words at all. Once you've got a grasp on what's okay, it's time to proceed.

Think about the feeling you're trying to create. Of course, you want the main focus to be "love"! But do you want something calm and subdued, upbeat, or a fun surprise your guests might barely pick up on, like an instrumental version of that rap song the two of you can't help but dance to? Don't be afraid to pick an unexpected genre, especially if there's an acoustic or instrumental version that will nod to your favorite tune without busting out the hard rock on your way down the aisle.

Of course, there are three big moments to pick music for: Both of your processionals (one song each) and the recessional. Your groom's processional could also be the song the wedding party walks down the aisle to, or you could give him a tune all his own, like you'll have. You can choose the songs together, or decide to surprise one another as the first notes are played. Choose songs you love now that you'll also love playing on future anniversaries (or just as you reminisce!). For the recessional, pick something upbeat and happy, as this symbolizes the start of the party! You may also need to choose processional songs for your families or the wedding party. Keep these in a similar tone and style as the songs you've chosen for yourself so everything flows together nicely.

BRIDES Florida: 8 City-Centric Tunes for Your Miami Wedding Playlist

Florida, Local, Miami, Music, Wedding Music, Wedding Reception  Comments Off on BRIDES Florida: 8 City-Centric Tunes for Your Miami Wedding Playlist
Sep 042016

Brides all over the world know that the key to getting guests up and dancing at a wedding is fun, catchy tunes. Luckily, Miami brides have a variety of hits to choose from. These fun, beachy melodies are the perfect Miami-themed songs to make sure every guest at the wedding is having a wonderful time. From nostalgic fun beats like "Miami" by Will Smith to classic songs like "Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin, the dance floor will be the place to be if you add any of these to your playlist.

"Miami" by Will Smith
Smith's 1997 single off of Big Willie Style brought us an infectious dance beat and a celebration of Miami's rich diversity. "Miami" won the MTV Video Music Award for "Best Male Video" in 1999. Play this popular hit at your wedding for a little nostalgia with girlfriends as you reminisce about your TRL years.

"Miami" by the Counting Crows
Another throwback, "Miami" by the Counting Crows, is a great low-key, laid-back song to play at cocktail or dinner hour as guests are sipping their drinks, eating, and mingling.

"Move Shake Drop" by Pitbull featuring Flo Rida
The ultimate merge of Florida rappers, this one should be played late in the night as it has quite the club feel. Listen to it once — and you'll be dancing in your seat. But let's be serious — any song by Pitbull is pretty fitting for a wedding in the 305.

"Miami" by Bob Seger
Previously heard on an episode of Miami Vice, this song celebrates the hope and optimism many have when they move to this vibrant city. A great pick for holding your glass high and toasting to the newlyweds post-speech.

"Only in Miami" by Bette Midler
This song is sure to please parents and grandparents alike. The tropical feel of the song has a true Floridian vibe, and the song — which tells the story of a girl who longs to be back in her native Cuba — was also previously featured on Miami Vice.

"Kokomo" by The Beach Boys
The quintessential beach song, this one is sure to invoke memories among every wedding guest over five. The 1988 song from their album Still Cruisin' is one to be remember, that's for sure.

"Beyond the Sea" by Bobby Darin
An ideal song to slow dance to, Darin's single was released in 1959 — just as swing style was fading. Little ones may remember the song from Disney's Finding Nemo, but after listening to the song, people of all ages will be excited to be in a city so close to the ocean.

"Under the Boardwalk" by The Drifters
If your wedding guest list has a lot of native Floridians, this needs to be on your must-play list. Essential for a beach wedding, this popular summer song by will get everyone in a mellow vibe pre-ceremony.

The 3 Kinds of Songs to Keep Off Your Wedding Playlist

Planning Tips, Wedding Music  Comments Off on The 3 Kinds of Songs to Keep Off Your Wedding Playlist
Aug 292016
songs to avoid at wedding

Photo: Getty Images

I'm a huge advocate of brides and grooms choosing and using the music they like for the wedding and wedding and reception, regardless of what anybody else's opinion might be. It's your wedding day and nobody else can tell you what you should, or should not, listen to while you're celebrating.

I certainly followed my own advice for my wedding, choosing songs that were significant to us, and to our loved ones, with little regard for the lyrics, and a zero care-factor about whether anybody was offended. There was some teasing when Shaggy's "Wasn't Me" started playing, but the dance floor was totally full.

With that said, despite the fact it's your wedding, you may want to think twice before choosing music that could actually offend some of your wedding guests. There are a LOT of obscene lyrics in some of the most popular hits today. And while it's so common that you might not even notice them anymore, odds are your grandmother and her friends will be shaking their heads. You have to be especially careful if you've invited a lot of children to the wedding because you don't want to make their parents angry.

See More: The Perfect Wedding Playlist ... According to a Groom

As a general rule, there are three themes to be avoided. Unless, of course, they're your favorite songs and you don't care what your guests think.

1. Songs About Anger or Revenge
Think Alanis Morisette, Papa Roach, Avril Lavigne... unless it's really danceable, you're just creating an awkward moment where it didn't exist. Pretty much everything by Pink has something in it about Carey Hart, most of it not very nice.

2. Depressing Ballads
Love songs are one thing, but songs about loves lost are entirely different. If you're a Clapton fan, go with "Wonderful Tonight" in lieu of "Tears in Heaven." George Straight lovers are better off using "I Cross my Heart" than "All My Exes Live in Texas." Unless, of course, you're actually from Texas and your guests will find it hilarious.

3. Bitter Jams
"You Give Love a Bad Name," "Tainted Love," "I Will Survive," and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" may actually draw your friends to the dance floor, but they don't convey the loving vibe you want your day to have. There are just as many happy dance tunes to work into your playlist.

Remember, it's your wedding and even if your favorite music isn't popular or necessarily appropriate, you can still use it. Just remember to ask the DJ to sandwich anything potentially controversial between typical wedding standbys, like a Michael Jackson mix, or the Grease mash-up.

If you like line dances, you should do them no matter how much flack you get from your less coordinated friends. Ignore anybody who doesn't like country music if that's your fave. At the end of the day, the wedding music you choose should reflect the taste and personality of the wedding couple, even if that taste isn't the current trend.

After saying your vows and eating an incredible meal, the perfect wedding is usually accomplished with a full night with your friends and family dancing under the stars. Top 40 bands have some catchy beats and latin flare can get the dance floor grooving, but sometimes a couple is begging for songs from another era — that guests across generations will know and love. Whether you're the couple that prefers Frank Sinatra's well-known hits or the couple that wants the vintage rock of '70s Rolling Stones, the below bands provide you with the best of Miami while celebrating your wedding reception in the way you've always dreamed.

Jerry Wayne's Private Party Band
Jerry Wayne's Private Party Band has years of experience and performance knowledge, meaning that they have the background necessary to perfectly deliver the classic wedding of your dreams. They pride themselves on avoiding a "cookie cutter" approach to weddings. Rather, the group much prefers to be open to any changes you may request to make your wedding customized to your tastes and preferences. Included on this list because of their unique, fun take on classic singles, the group enjoys mixing in some current trends with the goal to achieve a memorable wedding that your guests will be talking about for years to come. Read real brides' reviews here!

Jeff Grainger & The Hoboken 11
If the swinging styles of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are your cup of tea, then Jeff Grainger & The Hoboken 11 are the band for you. Fully clad in tuxedos, the group's deep baritone voice and incredibly skilled musicians will make you feel instantly transported through time. While the group is full of youthful energy, their fun vibe is matched only by their professionalism and musical talent — as many of the band-mates played in the Symphony Orchestra together in Cuba prior to coming to Miami. Whether you're interested in Jeff playing a solo show over your cocktail hour or you'd prefer a full 17-piece band complete with a string section, Jeff Grainger & The Hoboken 11 will set the scene perfectly for your classic event.

The Cat Daddies
The Cat Daddies are Miami's premier band for the classic rock-loving couple. After playing together for the past 11 years, these four band-mates are incredible musicians that still love to have a lot of fun on stage. While willing to be accommodating to any couple, The Cat Daddies pride themselves on playing the top songs on the B side of albums — the songs that you love, but you forgot how much you loved them. Being a group of two guitars, one bass, and one drummer, this group can fit perfectly in any size venue, from a small space to 500-person weddings.
