Same-Sex Couples Are Officially Getting Married in Hawaii!

Hawaii hosts first legal gay marriages

Hawaii is officially saying "aloha" to same-sex marriages! Just after midnight early Monday morning, six gay couples were the first to take vows under the new law allowing their marriages, which had just gone into effect. Gay marriage was legalized in Hawaii in November, making the state the 15th to do so in the United States.

The entire state immediately got in on the action. The Sheraton Waikiki resort hosted mass wedding ceremonies for any willing couples, while a group of clergy who pushed for the new law planned to host a wedding for an openly gay Unitarian minister at a church near downtown Honolulu. Either location would be a great option for a destination wedding perfectly timed with the new law!

According to the Associated Press, the law in Hawaii lets both gay and straight couples obtain a marriage license and marry in the same day, which makes it an ideal place for those who want to tie the knot. Researcher Summer Lacroix said, "Same sex couples will be attracted to Hawaii for the same reasons that opposite sex couples are attracted to Hawaii"—the weather, the beaches and "the aloha spirit." Those are pretty much all of the reasons it remains one of the world's top honeymoon destinations, as well.

See more: The Top 20 Honeymoon Resorts in the United States

Lacroix added that the legalized weddings will boost tourism revenue for Hawaii to $217 million in the next three years. The state is making it easy for couples to say "I do" in paradise, too: Couples can sign up for a license in person or online, then be verified by any license agent throughout the state.

Hawaii is often credited with starting the national gay marriage discussion, when couples applying for a marriage license led to a court fight the eventually helped prompt Congress to pass the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996. Part of the law was struck down earlier this year by the U.S. Supreme Court.

We're so excited to hear the news and even more excited to see pictures of all of the happy unions that come out of it.

Lucky in Love! Why 11/12/13 Is One Of the Most Popular Wedding Dates This Year

Ceremony & Vows, Wedding News  Comments Off on Lucky in Love! Why 11/12/13 Is One Of the Most Popular Wedding Dates This Year
Nov 122013

Let's face it: Weddings have a lot of superstition woven into their time-honored traditions. Brides still wear their something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue; most brides and grooms wait to see each other until the wedding ceremony; the wedding bouquet toss is meant to be caught by the next woman to be married; the list goes on. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that today, 11/12/13, is one of the most popular wedding dates this year.

See more: The Top 30 Online Wedding Sources

According to David's Bridal's annual survey, more than 3,000 weddings will take place in the U.S. today, compared with 371 weddings on the same date last year.

Brian Beitler, chief marketing officer for David's Bridal, said the company's November 16 to November 27 online survey of 500 engaged or married women found that there is a rising trend of couples seeking such memorable wedding dates.

"Iconic dates have become a trend in the U.S., reaching new heights when over 65,000 couples tied the knot on 07/07/07," Beitler told The Daily Mail.

"11/12/13 is a sequential pattern, and we have learned that couples love dates that have patterns, Beitler continued. "'The last consecutive series of the century will occur next year, 12/13/14. It falls on a Saturday, so we predict this date could reach record breaking numbers." How high are those numbers? Beitler is putting his estimate at 20,000!

See more: Heart-Themed Wedding Cakes

We're not surprised by this trend, though we are taken aback by its rapidly growing popularity. Though 11/12/13 falls on a tough-to-plan Tuesday, many couples are foregoing weekend nuptials for the memorable and luck-laden date. Bride-to-be Quon Malachi's fiance Mark Barnwell chose the date for a special reason. "He wants to tell our grandchildren we got married on 11/12/13," she told New York Daily News. As many brides personalize their wedding ceremonies and receptions, it fits that they would want a wedding and anniversary date that also felt completely original. It also makes for a fun theme for wedding favors!

With significant numbers in a wedding date come beliefs that the marriage is destined for good luck. Unsurprisingly, Las Vegas resorts and chapels know that many couples venture there to really cash in on that fortune.

The city's official tourism website describes the phenomena as such: "The phrase 'getting lucky in Las Vegas' takes a whole new meaning with numerically-themed wedding dates. Dates like 7-7-07, 10-10-10 and 12-12-12 have been especially popular. Other dates sure to be a hit include 11-12-13 and 12-13-14. So what is it about these "numerically interesting dates" that caused such a buzz? Couples love to celebrate their biggest day with memorable dates. And since Las Vegas and lucky numbers go hand-in-hand, these special dates make a winning combination."

Accordingly, Viva Las Vegas Wedding Chapel is offering themed wedding packages for what it calls "the charismatic and fun-loving couple[s] that gets married on a 12 day," while Chapel of the Flowers helps brides- and grooms-to-be plan a "11/12/13 Forever Ceremony." Meanwhile, The Cosmopolitan hotel allows guests to celebrate their special, sequential wedding date in the resort's The Chandelier event space. Last month, burger chain Smashburger hosted a contest that allowed couples to enter to win a free Las Vegas wedding on 11/12/13 hosted by none other than an Elvis impersonator (because Vegas).

What do non-Vegas minded brides think about getting married on a meaningful date? We asked real brides on our Facebook page to share any special, meaningful or unique numerical wedding dates and why they chose them. We loved hearing heart-warming wedding details and noticed some patterns. As it turns out, numerically-significant wedding dates are more common than we thought!

Sequential wedding dates
15% of brides who shared their special wedding dates fell into this category. We saw lots of weddings planned for 12/13/14, several that will happen today, and many that were on 10/11/12. One bride plans on saying "I do" 16 seconds after 1:15 pm today—giving her an exact wedding date of 11/12/13 at 14:15:16.

Repeat-number dates
10% of brides got married on dates that must have looked completely unique on wedding invitations. We saw many anniversaries announced, including 12/12/12 (an Amar'e Stoudemire-approved day), 11/11/11 (one bride even got married at 1 pm!), 11/1/11, 10/10/10, 08/08/08 (an infinite number, which was important for the bride's Greek husband), and 07/07/07.

Palindrome dates
It takes some very careful planning (and even swapping of numbers) to make these dates work, but 5% of our respondents did it! One bride chose to get married on 2/11/12 so the date would read the same both ways, another selected 12/8/12 for its symmetry, while another decided to wed on 12-21-12 even though it was supposed to be Doomsday! (Remember when people were worried about that?) Other brides, using the European form of calendar dates chose similarly appealing days to get married: These dates include 14/2/14, 14/6/14 and 15/8/15.

Mathematic dates
We're not surprised our Brides community is filled with smarties. Still, we couldn't believe that 4% of brides chose to get married on days with arithmetic meaning! Some examples:

2/7/14 (2 X 7= 14)

11/2/13 (11+2=13)

7/6/13 (07+06=13)

10/4/14 (10+4=14)

Getting married on an anniversary, birthday, or holiday, is nothing new, as many responses proved (we did like the bride who married on May 4 for its Star Wars connection). So many husbands forget anniversary dates, so what better way to seal it into his brain than with a super-cool, iconic numeric date? Now if you'll excuse us, we're going to prepare for 12/13/14!

Nov 122013

As the U.S. honors its military veterans today, David's Bridal showed its support for the armed forces by announcing a special week-long Veterans Day promotion: All brides that show a valid military ID for themselves or a loved one get 20 percent-off any bridal gown in the store. To kick off the event, David's Bridal partnered with Good Morning America, the USO, and Jason Derulo to help USO Coastguard Man of the Year, Sam Peikert, propose to his girlfriend live on air!

See more: Military Grooms Who Melt Our Hearts

As Derulo sang his hit single "Marry Me," Peikert surprised his love, Jackie Fairchild, with a bended-knee marriage proposal and engagement ring. Though Fairchild was completely shocked (check out the video above), she had another treat in store—David's Bridal brought her in to choose a free wedding dress.

The television event introduced their discount, which lasts through Friday, Nov. 15, and allows any service member and those marrying service members to worry less about the price tag on their dream wedding dress. According to David's Bridal, one in every three brides walks down the aisle in a gown purchased from one of their stores. That means there are a lot of military brides-to-be that are going to be very happy! As this photo shows, Fairchild is definitely one of them.

David's Bridal's discount is in collaboration with the USO and their new "Every Moment Counts" national campaign, which rallies Americans to honor and create moments that matter for troops and their families. Through the promotion, David's Bridal celebrates weddings as one of life's most special moments.

"Many of our brides have connections to the military, so giving back to those who serve our country is very important to us," said David's Bridal Executive Vice President, Stores Cynthia Harriss. "In celebration of Veterans Day, we want to show our support and appreciation for all of these brave men and women and their families."

Any eligible women interested in taking advantage of the 20 percent Veterans Day discount can visit David's Bridal to find a store near them. The discount applies to every bridal gown in store, from David's Bridal's core collections to designer gowns from White by Vera Wang, Melissa Sweet, Oleg Cassini, and more. Spreading The Love: Illinois Votes Yes on Same-Sex Marriage!

Real Weddings, Same-Sex Marriage, Wedding News  Comments Off on Spreading The Love: Illinois Votes Yes on Same-Sex Marriage!
Nov 062013

Get ready for even more wedding bells to ring starting next summer! The Supreme Court's 5-4 decision that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated the Fifth Amendment in June ushered in what we now think of as the summer of love (and marriage). The decision insured that same-sex couples can receive hundreds of federal benefits and set off a flurry of high-profile same-sex marriage proposals (Lance Bass!), weddings (Greg Louganis!), and joy that love was becoming more free (Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard even waited to say "I do" until all of their friends could, too).

As of Tuesday night, there is another reason to celebrate: The Illinois House of Representatives voted to allow same-sex couples to marry! The vote clears the way for Illinois to become the 15th state, along with Washington, D.C., to permit gay couples to wed. Same-sex couples in Illinois have probably already popped lots of champagne (and exchanged many engagement rings), considering Gov. Pat Quinn has already said he will sign it, meaning Illinois couples can likely begin marrying on June 1.

"In Illinois, we tried civil unions and that separate status has time and time again proved to fall short," State Representative Greg Harris, a sponsor of the bill, told The New York Times as he urged his House colleagues to approve the measure on Tuesday.

The happy news comes less than a month after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie withdrew his efforts to block same-sex marriage in his state. Legal weddings began there last month—allowing for some beautiful ceremony's set against the Garden State's fall foliage.

We are thrilled about the wave of marriage equality sweeping the nation, and we can't wait to see what kind of summer weddings Illinois's happiest couples are planning!

Barcelona-based wedding dress designer Rosa Clara is known for her sleek lines and fashion-forward detailing. Stylish brides from all around the world seek out the Spanish dressmaker's romantic yet modern designs. Her most recent runway showed gowns for the 2014 season designed to recall the decadent details of the Roaring Twenties. So it's no wonder that when it came time for the beloved bridal gown guru to say, "I do" all eyes were on her stylish ceremony and reception (which, too, reflected the intricately beaded, dropped-waist details of her history-inspired runway collection). Below, see the stunning photos and read up on all of the details of this designer's Vintage-styled affair.

On June 15, 2013, bridal designer Rosa Clara married her husband at Barcelona's Saló de Cent, the historic city hall, surrounded by an intimate gathering of their closest family and friends. The day was designed with elegant simplicity in mind; the designer created her gown, a pearl-grey silk crepe column, with sleeves that extended just past her wrists, buttoning on the hand. With a nod to '30s deco, the gown was embroidered from the waist down with rhinestones and silver bugle beads.

"The Art Deco embroidery reminded me of the great masters of illustrative art of the late 20s and early 30s," said the designer. "The dress references the nostalgic romanticism of the era."

After the ceremony, the guests joined the newlyweds to celebrate at La Florida Hotel (overlooking the Mediterranean Sea!), where Michelin-star chef Nandu Juabany created a traditional Spanish menu. We're sure former Smash star Megan Hilty is singing a love song or two right about now! The actress wed longtime love and fellow actor Brian Gallagher this past Saturday at the Venetian chapel in Las Vegas. The two lovebirds met at a fitness class while both were performing on Broadway.

See more: Design Your Dream Engagement Ring!

Hilty wore an ultra-glam beaded cap-sleeve Badgley Mischka gown to the intimate wedding ceremony, People reports, while Gallagher looked extra dapper in a J. Lindberg tuxedo. The actress must have snagged her wedding dress straight off of the runway—the beaded fit-and-flare stunner was shown in the Badgley Mischka Fall 2014 collection just a few weeks ago!

We love how Hilty also rocked retro Marilyn Monroe-esque curls. Although she now stars on NBC's Sean Saves the World, it seems that Smash, a show centered around the production of a Broadway show dedicated to the '50s bombshell, left an impression on its former leading lady!

The couple were so excited to wed, that they skipped the engagement all together!

"We shared a perfect weekend with our family," the actress told Us Weekly. "To us it's more about the marriage than the actual wedding, which is why we decided to skip the whole engagement thing. We couldn't be happier!"

Their happiness is pretty contagious. Right after vows were exchanged, the two couldn't wait to take to Twitter and Instagram to announce their nuptials.

Megan Hilty immediately changed her Twitter profile picture to one of the two flashing their brand-new wedding rings (see above) and tweeted:

Brian then responded to his brand-new bride "I love you!" and posted an adorable photo, below, with the caption "WE DID IT!!! #justmarried."

Congrats to the two, who are not only embarking on a lifelong marriage together, but will also join together in a performance later this month in Los Angeles. How sweet!

Digital Love: How An Engaged Couple Met and Fell in Love On Instagram

Engagement, Wedding News  Comments Off on Digital Love: How An Engaged Couple Met and Fell in Love On Instagram
Nov 012013

Social media romances are practically de rigeur these days. From elaborate marriage proposals going viral on YouTube to Pinterest-planned weddings, digital love is truly all around.

See more: 25 Ways to Personalize Your Wedding Ceremony

Engaged couple Elizabeth Wisdom and Denis Lafargue are taking that trend to unprecedented levels. The pair met and fell in love on Instagram and, on June 27, got engaged with the help of Wisdom's Instagram posts.

It all started last summer, when Wisdom, a photographer, shared this photo from her family vacation to Crater Lake in Oregon on her Instagram page. Lafargue happened upon the shot and commented, "*Gasping* I miss this place." The two were complete strangers, but they had a short exchange of comments, culminating in Lafargue jokingly suggesting they move there. Wisdom's response? "Yes! Haha. I could definitely live there. ;)"

From there, they began regularly commenting on each others' pictures, leaving affectionate comments back and forth. They eventually exchanged numbers so they could communicate outside of the photo-sharing app. Last October, Wisdom bit the bullet and flew to New Orleans to meet her virtual love in person. The meeting went well, and Lafargue eventually called her his "Instalady." Through trips back and forth between New Orleans and Wisdom's East Texas hometown, their connection deepened.

See more: 10 Over-the-Top Places to Get Engaged

A year after their first interaction, their unconventional beginning led to a traditional relationship milestone: A marriage proposal. Lafargue took Wisdom to a barn near her home in Texas, where she told him she wanted to get married someday. Inside the barn, he had hung Instagram photos as an actual timeline, with personal notes attached. Then, engagement ring in hand, he got down on one knee.

Lafargue described the entire proposal as such:

"Yesterday, I drove out and surprised Elizabeth by proposing to her out at her grandma's. She and her parents came out to have dinner with grandma like any other day, but when they pulled up there was a note from me telling Elizabeth to go to the back door. And at the back door I had set up a 30 picture timeline of me and Elizabeth's Instagram posts leading to the barn. It started with when we made our IG accounts, to when I followed her last summer, the posts where we started flirting, the post when I got her phone #, the process of us "talking." us skyping, her coming to New Orleans for the first time, our LumberJack photo shoot, Christmas, our birthdays, Valentines day, our trip to Austin, the beach, our families finally meeting last weekend, and everything in between! Meanwhile, I was waiting with my guitar in the barn. As she got into the barn, I played her a juicy, romantic song that I wrote for her. After many pauses and tears of joy, I finished the song, got on one knee and asked Elizabeth to marry me! It was so perfect out there. The sun was setting, and she looked so beautiful. So excited for our future together. // This is the note and the first 3 pictures in the timeline. I printed the photos out and pasted them onto paper that I soaked in coffee. Under each photo I wrote the date of the post, what it symbolized, and our comments. Then strung them up on string between bamboo shoots. // Also, Thank y'all so much for all the support as we have journeyed in our relationship thus far. This is an amazing community that I'm blessed to be a part of. And to read y'all's wonderful, encouraging comments is just so amazing."

Talk about a 21st-century love story. The couple is currently planning a wedding for next fall, and we have a hunch that their ceremony and reception décor will incorporate Instagram pictures somehow. Whatever wedding style they choose, we know the photography will be top-knotch—and well-shared!

This week is full of even more Kardashian news, and this time, it's not about the Kimye wedding.

See more: Design Your Dream Engagement Ring!

Khloe Kardashian Odom and Lamar Odom are officially back together, Us Weekly reports. This news comes after months of separation. Khloe, who married Odom after only a month of dating in 2009, kicked the NBA player out of the house after learning that he was cheating on her and using drugs.

"We're wonderful. We're unbreakable," Odom told Us. "That's why I wear my wedding ring."

"It is a beautiful ring," he added to the magazine. "From a beautiful wife."

The estranged couple was spotted attending soon-to-be brother-in-law Kanye West's "Yeezus" tour this past Monday in Los Angeles. Odom was even dancing with fellow members of the Kardashian clan.

See more: Wedding Etiquette Tips for Brides: Guests and Family

Khloe has remained uncharacteristically tight-lipped about the whole situation, save a few cryptic tweets and Instagram posts. However, E! news reported earlier this week that the two have been engaging in "secret meetings" to discuss their marital problems.

"They have been spending an increasing amount of time together," the source told the network. "At one time it seemed like a reconciliation was impossible and divorce was inevitable. Things may have turned a corner."

"He has never stopped loving Khloe. He adores her," the source added. "And he wants to prove to her that he is the same person she married."

Personally, we're huge fans of the couple, who are always so lovey-dovey on screen. Maybe Kanye's romantic proposal inspired Khloe to give her man on the mend a second chance. Best of luck to the couple!
