Oh Heel No! 6 Reasons to Consider Wearing Flats for Your Wedding

Wedding Flats for Brides

If you're like us, you love a sexy stiletto as much as the next girl. But when it comes to your wedding day shoes, rocking a super high heel may not be in the cards. For both practical purposes and personal preferences, here are 6 reasons you may want to fall back on flats for your wedding after all.

1. Your feet will do a little happy dance
And you'll actually be able to dance without having to kick your heels off just to get some relief. A lot of brides don't realize exactly how long they'll be on their feet (um, all day!) because it's not simply for the ceremony and reception but the entire time beforehand too. Our suggestion? If you care about comfort, do your feet a favor and stick to fancy flats so you're not that bride who complains about how bad her feet are killing her the whole night. Annoying!

2. You're less likely to trip
As every girl knows, heels can be hard to walk in, especially when you're rocking a long gown and strutting down an aisle in front of a huge audience. Just think about how many actresses trip (ahem, Jennifer Lawrence) on the red carpet! The last thing you need on your wedding day is an ankle sprain. So avoid the embarrassment (and scars) of falling flat on your face by sporting flats.

3. Your hubby will look taller
If you and your fiancé are similar heights and you don't want to totally tower over him in wedding pics or he's self-conscious about it, then flats may be the perfect fit for you. It'll give your boo a little ego boost to look all tall and manly standing next to you. Definitely talk it over with him first and see if it's even an issue. Believe it or not, some guys are really weird about height so it's important to be sensitive to this.

4. The terrain isn't exactly heel-friendly
If you're getting hitched on the beach or anywhere outdoors really, heels may not be the most practical choice for the terrain. For instance, stilettos will quickly sink into sand and trip you up stat, whereas heel protectors are a must if you're saying, "I do" in the grass. And sadly they're not exactly attractive, nor are they 100% guaranteed to work as advertised.

5. You'd really want to wear your wedding shoes again
Those fancy high heels you bought specifically for the wedding? Chances are, you'll never actually wear them again. Blinged out flats, on the other hand, are a great way to dress up even the most casual outfit without sacrificing comfort for style. Pick a pair that you'd wear for the wedding and beyond.

6. You never wear heels in real life
If you're not sporting high heels on the reg in real life, there's no reason to try out a foreign style on your big day just to be "fashionable". Stay true to your style instead and stick to what works best for you and what you're most comfortable in. Otherwise you're going to look super awkward trying to figure out how to walk in heels for the first time.

BRIDES Florida: Miami’s Top Shops for Killer Wedding Shoes

Saying yes to your dream wedding dress may seem like the most important shopping decision you'll ever make — until you come to the shoes. In Miami, anything goes as brides often hit the aisle barefoot (as well as in five-inch Louboutins). Just as with your dress, shoe shopping is all about style, comfort, and price point, so if you've been waiting for that right time to splurge on designer heels, now's the moment to go all out. Here are a few of the best boutiques and bridal salons known for their showstopping selection of shoes sure to complete your picture-perfect wedding day look.

TAJ by Sabrina Crippa
Boho brides going for a beach chic style can sport their "something new" wearing an original design by Miami Beach-based TAJ by Sabrina Crippa. The designer, who hails from Milan, pulls inspiration from patterns and techniques she's come across while traveling the globe. Capture a little piece of India or the Italian Riviera with these hand-designed sandals that range from simple and sophisticated strappy suede numbers to bejeweled beauties reminiscent of Eastern bazaars. Easily transitioned from day to night (and great to bring along on a beach honeymoon), these sandals can be considered a staple statement piece to add to your wardrobe post-wedding, and come at price points that fit budgets big and small.

Christian Louboutin
Shoes are one of the best ways to subtly throw in that "something blue," but if you really want to add a pop to your wedding day ensemble, go for red. Louboutin's signature soles always make a statement and will not only look good in photos, they'll also look gorgeous as you're gliding down the aisle. The French designer even has a whole collection designed with the bride in mind, with wedding white stilettos as well as more off-the-wall styles adorned with spikes and studs. Read real brides' reviews here!

Brides who prefer boutiques to big department stores will fall head over heels for Capretto and the carefully curated collection of designer duds. Browse the shelves of shoes bearing designer names that range from Balmain and Balenciaga to Pierre Hardy and Proenza Schouler. Styles are sure to suit every type of bride, whether you want a look that's more over-the-top with tons of colors and tassels or something demure, opting for softer palettes and kitten heels.

Koko & Palenki
Three of these designer shoe-filled boutiques are scattered throughout Miami in the best of places: Dadeland Mall, Aventura Mall and the Shops at Merrick Park. From big name brands to some of the newer emerging designers, the stores are stocked with the best selections from each season so brides can rest assured their shoe pick will be perfectly on point for the big day.

A Bride’s Guide to Pulling Off a Mid-Wedding Shoe Change

Etiquette, Jewelry & Accessories, Wedding Etiquette, Wedding Shoes  Comments Off on A Bride’s Guide to Pulling Off a Mid-Wedding Shoe Change
Oct 052016

Once you've found the perfect wedding dress, it's time for accessories. From a veil to jewelry, there are so many beautiful ways to customize your bridal look — and shoes are no exception! Whether you go for classic ivory pumps or "something blue" embellished flats, we're huge fans of having a special shoe peeking out from beneath your wedding dress. But as they say, sometimes beauty is pain and those stilettos may not feel so great beyond your walk down the aisle. So can you swap your shoes out when it's time to hit the dance floor? Our experts weigh in.

Every bride has her own game plan for wedding-day footwear. Some splurge on designer heels (which can sometimes be more comfortable than their lower-priced counterparts because of the materials and construction), while others grab their go-to pair, choose boots, or stick to flats. If you're concerned about how comfortable your shoes will be by the time the reception rolls around, by all means, bring a back-up pair with you! After all, you'll want to be on the dance floor all night!

If you do think you'll want to change your shoes mid-party, try to find a second pair that has a similar heel height to your ceremony shoes. A difference of any more than a half an inch will cause your dress to either drag on the ground or be too short and reveal your toes. Be sure to bring both pairs with you to your dress fittings, so your seamstress can offer some advice about making sure you don't accidentally trip on your skirt.

A great way to increase your comfort is to change from a stiletto to a thicker heel or a wedge (possibly with a platform, which will give you height while giving your arches a break). If there was ever a time to wear a wedge sneaker, the dance floor at your wedding is it!

Getting married outdoors? You may want to do a reverse shoe switch. Don your reception shoes for those getting-ready shots, then change into a comfortable wedge for your walk down the aisle, especially if you'll be on grass and outdoors for pictures immediately before or after the ceremony. Then, when you're on solid ground for the reception, put your heels on and be comforted by the fact that you know you've got those back-ups nearby!

Tips For Choosing The Right Shoes For Your Wedding

Photo: Perry Vaile

When it comes to your wedding shoes, comfort is key! After all, anybody who has ever really thought about Cinderella's glass slippers knows she didn't accidentally lose one on her way to the carriage — she'd taken those painful heels-from-hell off hours before. Sadly, often the prettiest shoes are not meant for comfortably dancing all night. What's a bride to do?

Obviously, you want to wear something pretty on your feet, but do they have to be high heels? And what if you want to wear them for your wedding ceremony, but not the entire reception? Or vice versa. We've got the answers.

Do not attempt to wear heels of any kind on the sand for a beach ceremony. They will sink in, and you will lurch your way down the aisle. You'll be wiggling through the wedding ceremony as you unstick yourself, or you won't be concentrating on your wedding vows because you're concentrating on keeping your weight completely on your toes. It's a losing battle either way.

Heels on a lawn can be almost as tricky, especially if it has rained recently. Not only will you be uncomfortable, you'll destroy those beautiful shoes. Wedges are a better choice, but consider ones not made of fabric so that they can be effectively cleaned after the ceremony. If the reception is indoors, you can switch to another shoe of the same height after the ceremony and pictures.

The trick is to make sure that you have the bridal shop hem your wedding gown to the appropriate length for whatever shoe you decide to wear for your wedding ceremony. Nothing looks worse than a too-long dress on a bride as she walk down the aisle, kicking it out in front of her.

See More: Wedding Shoe Shopping Tips Direct from a Bridal Stylist

However, nobody will notice if you opt to go barefoot on a beach, for example, and then slip into heels for your first dance at the wedding reception. If anything, they'll actually see the shoes when they probably wouldn't have if the dress was longer.

The trick is that it's much harder to go backwards — as in, wearing super-high platform heels for the ceremony, and then dropping down to ballet flats during the reception. That's when the dress really gets in the way. It will get stepped on by guests on the dance floor.

If you know you're going to want to wear lower shoes for the reception, do your best not to select the highest possible heels for the ceremony. And consider a lower shoe that isn't actually flat for the reception. Have the gown hemmed shorter than the bridal shop recommends. They never like to shorten a gown for a shoe change, but that decision is ultimately up to you.

Whether you want your bridesmaids to all look alike as they stand next to you at the altar or you'd rather encourage each to have her own personal flair, the shoe choice is crucial in completing a wedding-day look. Once the dresses are chosen and accessories decided, it's time to focus on what fabulous shoes your girls should don to walk with you down the aisle. Thankfully there are plenty of chic stores for Chicago brides and their closest friends to find the perfect fit when seeking out the best shoes for the bridal party.

This Windy City staple has been the Chicago girl's best friend for years. Their Lincoln Park store is a shoe shopper's dream, with feminine — and affordable — choice from brands like Vince Camuto, Steve Madden, and Pelle Moda. They're especially well stocked with tasteful metallic styles (think silver, rose gold, bronze), which is always an elegant choice to complement that special dress.

While Akira's overall variety may seem more weekend than wedding, they offer quite a few bridal party-appropriate shoe styles. In fact, the Chicago chain started out in footwear, and has remained true to its routes. Akira is ideal for brides and their bridesmaids who may be on a budget, as many of their shoe choices can fall below $100. The styles run the gamut from simple pumps to fur pom-pom detailed sandals (they're actually really cute!). Something for every bridesmaid, for sure.

Click Shoes
If shopping locally is on your priority list, then Click Shoes is a must-see for you and your bridal party. This quaint boutique near Wrigleyville houses a well-curated selection of women's footwear, ranging from party-ready heels to weekend-perfect sneakers. They also have an adorable variety of feminine flip-flops, which will be a godsend for your girls as they dance the night away at the reception.

L.K. Bennett
While the London-based brand (and Duchess of Cambridge favorite!) is known for their versatile selection of pumps, they make a variety of other styles as well. While you won't find look-at-me colors or dazzling details at this refined retailer, the understated elegance of their shoes will prove both versatile and supremely flattering for all of your bridesmaids.

Located on Michigan Avenue, Nordstrom recently re-vamped their entire shoe floor, which means an even more dynamic setting for quite possibly the world's biggest variety of shoes. Plus, there's a bar located in the middle of the second floor for much-needed pre and post-shopping cocktails with your besties. Read real brides' reviews here!

Shoeaholic brides, rejoice. Stuart Weitzman is no stranger to the fact that self-expression begins from the feet up, and the brand's newly expanded iconic bridal shoe collection is pure wedding day perfection!

Comprised of 10 core bridal styles in three fabrics (an elegant white satin, a luxe argento noir, or platinum gold noir), this amazing collection has something for every modern bride on the prowl for the perfect pair of wedding shoes. From the arms of Mother Nature to an upscale city venue, this new offering can walk down any aisle. Throwing a romantic woodland affair? The delicate d'orsay lace-up ballet flat will carry your whimsical feet to the altar. Having a beachy bash? A chic t-strap flat sandal just might be your savior. Not about the flats, but not feeling the stiletto? No worries — the stylish wedge provides height and comfort.

There's also an elegant pointed-toe single-sole pump (in both a kitten heel and high heel no less) for the classy bride, and a modern round-toe platform pump for the glam girl. And for the chic bride, fear not; the celebrity favorite Nudist has taken a leap from the red carpet to the wedding aisle. The best part? It comes in stiletto heights for every bride to strut her stuff, available in four different options, from 2 inches for the dainty to 4 inches for the daring.

If you're really feeling like Cinderella, you also have the option to adorn any white satin style with clear, chalk white or Something Blue sapphire Swarovski crystals (the latter of which bumps the retail price from $365-$445 up to $2,200-$3,500).

But the customization only gets sweeter! Inspired by Stuart Weitzman's own proposal to his wife of 50 years — in which he was a true Prince Charming and got down on one knee with a custom-made shoe inscribed "Made expressly for the future Mrs. Weitzman" — brides have the option to personalize their sock lining with their new married name and wedding date. Our hearts can't beat any faster.

Your ultimate shoe shot just got that much better and your dance floor that much brighter. The new collection is available directly at Stuart Weitzman.

BRIDES Private Access: Behind the Scenes with Our First Bride-to-Be, Emily

Apr 042016

Here at BRIDES, we live, breathe, and dream weddings — and sharing our tips and tricks to planning the perfect day is the core of what we do. That's why we were so excited to kick off our first bridal guest in the BRIDES fashion closet — as part of our new BRIDES Private Access, an expert wedding style consultation service for brides-to-be. Our first bride, Emily, is getting married on August 27, 2016, so she utilized our VIP services (which include touring our Manhattan offices and receiving a full day of pampering and wedding planning with our genius editors in our coveted fashion closet). Here, we share a little bit about her bridal experience at our Condé Nast offices in New York City.

Emily's day started with a delicious breakfast at our luxurious World Trade Center dining area (with a beautiful view of the city from top!) where she enjoyed a delicious made-to-order breakfast with one of our editors. From there, the bride-to-be was whisked away into our lace and tulle wonderland — the BRIDES fashion closet! Inside our wedding-planning sanctuary, shoes, dresses, and bridal jewelry galore are fit to be tried — all at the bride-to-be's disposal. BRIDES' Editor-in-Chief, Keija Minor, was there to greet her, and after enjoying some French macarons while chatting everything weddings, it was time to get serious.

And by serious, we of course mean having a morning mimosa and chatting with our expert hair stylist and makeup artist about an ideal wedding-day look! Emily opted for a half up/half down style with loose curls — accessorized with a beautiful crystal hair clip from our swoon-worthy accessories collection. Jewelry and accessory heaven, that's for sure.

After the major glam session, it was time for some shoes and wedding-dress fun (and modeling!). Before the BRIDES Private Access experience, Emily explained that she had no idea of what she was looking for dress-wise. "I came in only having pinned a few things on Pinterest and ripping out a few pages of a magazine." Luckily, our editors came to the rescue and helped her consider some styles to accentuate her best features and flatter her physique — with results that will definitely 'wow' her groom on the big day.

In the white dress wonderland, Emily perused the couture gowns and luxurious styles with the help of our fashion director, Elle Strauss, who stopped by to give some wedding-style tips. Our bride-to-be picked several styles to try — and of course her try-on sesh included a "Say Yes to the Dress" moment, where she picked her favorite!

"After trying on a few dresses, I knew exactly what I was looking for in a dress — and the editors gave good feedback about the color, silhouette, and style that flattered my body the most. When I went dress shopping a week later with my bridesmaids, I was a woman on a mission," Emily shared.

But that's not all: at the end of the morning, Emily was gifted a bridal gift bag that rivaled most VIP goodie bags, filled with wedding-planning tools, beauty products, and essentials as well as a Pinterest-inspired mood board for her wedding planning to come. "Wearing a beautiful wedding dress — with my makeup and hair done with all the accessories — was something that will stick with me for the rest of my life. The whole experience was magical; I was floating in the clouds the whole day!" Pristine, pampered, and prepared — that's how we like to leave our brides!
